The choreography of the three Bransles in Agon, also referred to as "branles", is based only loosely on the seventeenth-century French court dance in which couples would dance in a circle or a row. Traditionally, the dance was accompanied by singing and involved some swaying movements of the body or hands.

Branle/bransle/brawl has different spellings in different countries. The spelling "branle" is used throughout the Evans/Sutton Dover edition of Arbeau’s Orchesographie (which is kind-of the "O’Neill’s" of dance in that period) but it’s one of those words that gets around.

Spelling varies greatly: bransle, brangle, brawl, brawle, brall (e), braul (e), or (Scot.) brantle. The branle (also spelled “bransle” in Renaissance French) is a type of chain-dance which was first described in the 16th century (Antonius Arena 1538, Thoinot Arbeau 1589). Branles typically include simple steps and double steps in some combination that follows the rhythm of the melody. Danced at Queen's Birthday Contra dance Christchurch, New Zealand.
